Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit – you choose. (Proverbs 18:21 MSG)
When we are tempted to poison people with our words, may we remember the example of Jesus when responding to his temptations in the wilderness (Matthew 4, and Luke 4):
1. Stop and think before acting. Do not let our “feelings of the moment” dictate our immediate actions.
2. Keep our words grounded in reality; knowing that choosing the “poison” of abusing any power or authority we may have through the choice of our words has potentially serious—and negative–consequences.
3. Stay connected to the presence of our Higher Power.
Prayer: God of choices, when it is time to choose how we use our words, help us to choose life.
