Question of the Day:
Why is the practice of awareness necessary?
To be aware is not just to be conscious of the many things around us. Scholars speak of objectless consciousness. We are not necessarily being aware of any particular thing, but being able to take in all that the situation offers without eliminating anything.
Now this does not come naturally to us. We have to work for this type of awareness. Meditation and contemplation help us to compartmentalize our “monkey-mind” which jumps from one observation to another, from one thought to another, and from one feeling to another with absolutely no real meaning. We have lived with this “monkey mind” so long that we take it as normative. This sort of thinking cannot access the great realities of love, freedom, infinity, suffering, eternity and God. This sort of thinking substitutes mere information about things for wisdom.

People often say with pride, “I’m not interested in politics.” They might as well say, “I’m not interested in my standard of living, my health, my job, my rights, my freedoms, my future, or any future.”

Liberalism is trust of the people tempered by prudence. Conservatism is distrust of the people tempered by fear.

The mob is man voluntarily descending to the nature of the beast. . . It persecutes a principle; it would whip a right; it would tar and feather justice.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
