We’re Evolving, Thank God
Genesis 1:1-2:4a

Bible Excerpt
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light;” and there was light . . . Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

by Lillian Daniel

God created everything that exists, and for some reason, left us in charge. What was God thinking?

It reminds me of my very first baby-sitting job, when I thought, “Shouldn’t someone else be here making these decisions?” But at the age of eleven, I had been left in charge. I immediately went searching for potato chips, soda and the remote control. In other words, I thought first about my own needs.

How has humanity taken care of God’s earth? Our first instinct has been to see what we can get from the earth, be it grain, gold or oil. But in Genesis we are given dominion over the earth not for what we can wring out of it, but because God thinks that this will be good.

Most of us are a mass of inconsistencies when it comes to our relationship to the earth. One person compulsively recycles while driving an SUV. Another refuses to eat meat but wears her mother’s old fur jacket. There is no moral purity when it comes to being stewards of the earth. It is as if we have been given a job at which we cannot possibly succeed.

Or can we? Perhaps success is in the striving. There’s still time to take care of the earth. After all, that is the nature of God’s creation–always evolving, changing, and growing, just like we are.

Remind me, God of the beauty of your earth, and the responsibility of tending to the harvest. Give bread to those who have none, and a hunger for justice to those who have plenty. Amen.
