Incline Your Soul to Listen
Excerpt from Psalm 85: 8-13
“Let me hear what God the Lord will speak…”
Reflection by Felix Carrion
I am fond of saying, “God is equal parts listening and speaking.” Personally, I would not want a God who spoke all the time. I would feel like She/He wasn’t listening.
In the United Church of Christ, we have been beautifully affirming that God is still speaking. We have claimed Gracie Allen’s words for ourselves: “Never place a period where God has placed a comma.” We reached far back to bring to light John Robinson’s words, “The Lord has more truth and light to break forth from [God’s] Holy Word.”
If this is true even now, and we indeed believe that it is, our most faithful response can only be to hear what God is saying to us. Our proclamation that God is still speaking requires an inclined, listening posture toward our God. God is still speaking is the “subtle” call of the spiritual life.
From Psalm 85 we gather that “God will speak peace to his people.” Dear friend, the word God speaks is peace; not punishment. Incline your soul to listen to this word spoken to you and you will hear it, and you will be at peace.
O God, I incline my whole being to you. I trustingly await your word. Amen.
