Hippie Rant (from the past): If I only I could pray

I find myself praying a prayer that bothers me quite a bit.

I find myself praying that God will give each and every person on the Right, each and every member of of the Republican Party, each and every memeber of Tea Party a heasrt of compassion.

That in and of itself might be a good thing, if it weren’t for the fact that the wyat I would like to see God accomplish this probably isn’t very kind or loving.

I’d like to see them suddenly face, rhrough no fault o their own, the loss of their home

I’d like to see them suddenly have their insurance company suddenly and without warning’deop” them the insant they need coverage.

I’d like to see them lose their jobs because someone thouight they might be “homosexual”..

I’d like to see those who travel outside the USA suddenly picked up, held without charge, abd toroturd because someone thought they or someone they knew is a terrorist.

I’d like to see them find themselves in need of help, and find there is now one willing or able to help them.

Maybe then they would understand why “they should care” about anyone who is not of “them”.

And then, then, I hope that God would use someone, someone like the people they having been turning their back on, soneone like me to help them out.

Is that a bad prayer?

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because [the Lord] has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. [The Lord] has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.”
– Luke 4:18

“Civil disobedience is, traditionally, the breaking of a civil law to obey a higher law, sometimes with the hope of changing the unjust civil law. … But we should speak of such actions as divine obedience, rather than civil disobedience. The term ‘disobedience’ is not appropriate because any law that does not protect and enhance human life is no real law.”

Hippie Rant: That Flag

(I wrote this originally in 2008)

I am writing this because I had a friend tell me that he didn’t understand why anyone would associate the Confederate Flag with racism.

“After all, The Civil War”, my friend said, “had nothing to do with slavery”

I didn’t and don’t want to argue that paricular point, because even now what we” are tolf the reasons for a war are, and what they rerally are don’t always seem to match up.

All I could/can do, is explain why this Black person has a gut reaction when I see that particular Flag.

First you need to understand that I am over a half-cenurty old. Things that “you” think are history now, are vivid parts of my memory and life.

Second you need to understand that my Fathers side of the family is from the south, and that those uncle and aunts and cousins who lived in Chicago were not even a whole genration in the North. If long distance calls were expensive. letters were cheap and so that there was a constant flow of information between the Family. In addttion, there was a “tradition” among many Black families of sending children South for alll or part the summer,

I can remember going with my father’s Mother “Down South” for the summer of 1960.

We had to pack food, because there ware few places along the roadthat Black people could dtop and get a meal. We also had to pack Toilet paper because there were also few places that allowed Black people to use the “public” restrooms.

I was told that I must adrees every White person, even if they were my own age (i was seven) with the honorific “mr.” or “miss”, or there could be dire, even deadly consqauences.

And as we travlled down the carious highways and roads where we dared not stop, it seemed that everywhere I looked I saw that “red, white and blue Flag” that was so different from the “American Flag”.

Once we got down to the farms where my relatives lived, I discovered that “we” were not allowed in the naearb town. Anything that the families could not raise themselves was either bought via “catloug” (or mailed from up North by the releatives in Chicago, Nerw Yorl, Milwaukee, erc), or cought from a huge “store-on wheels that visited the farms in the area on a regular basis.

It never occured to me till I sat down to write this, that I never thoght to ask where the kids went to school. All my relatives could read I know, so they must have learned somewhere.

**********

I didn’t get back down South again until 1972., on a kind of “speaking toue” of Black colleges and University. Which was particulalry interesting since even tho segregation was supposed to be illegal, the State colleges and Universities were still pretty much racially “seperate and unequal”.

People often say with pride, “I’m not interested in politics.” They might as well say, “I’m not interested in my standard of living, my health, my job, my rights, my freedoms, my future, or any future.”

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 3,600 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 6 years to get that many views.

Hippie Rant: What I want for Christmas

Well there are a number of people who have been asking me these days, “What do you want for Christmas?”

This year I am truly unsure of just how I am supposed to answer that question.

A dear woman who was driving me home from church, asked “What do you want for Christmas”.

Without thinking I said. “Oh, I’d like to have anew TV an iPod, or an IMac”.

There was a strange silence..a very, very, long somewhat uncomfortable pause before I got what I had done.

“Well of course I know I am not going to get any of those things, but they’re fun to wish for!!”, I laughed.

She laughed too.

I have come to learn that among the many people I know, that they asuume because I am a Hippie, I am not in to wanting to have have material things.

I have come to learn that among most of the people I know, that expect me to say, because I am a Hippie Bleeding heart Liberal:

  • “I want World peace”
  • “I want end to poverty”
  • “I want the end of racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia”

Alright, I do want that….but I want some THINGS. Some TOYS. Some GOODUES.

    I do, I really do.

So if you haven’t got anybody else to buy Christmas presents for, I’m rasing my hand….

    Me…Me…Me…buy presents for me!!

  • Hippie Rant: This is the Day!!

One way or another this is going to be one of the most important days of our lives.

Even more important than the day the USA’s first Black America was elected. We are either going to see one side “take our country back”, or we going to see the USA continue to make a Rightward tone.

If you are a US Citizen, there should be no reason why you aren’t casting a vote today.

    NONE

    It will make a difference.

Not voting is telling one side or another that they win, even if you meant to say they lost.

You will be voting for continuation of Medicare or against it.

Voting for war in Syria and Iraq, or against war.

Voting for equality for women, or for women staying home and being a little less than men.

    And so much more…

    Vote.

    This is “your” day.

    Hippie Rant: Waving the Flag

(Again, I am posting something that I had originally written in 2009. It is starting to get down-right depressing how little minds have changed for the bette..)

I imagine I am going to make a lot of angry people very angry with this post.

I just hope that if I do make you angry, you’ll 1) let me know as politely as possible, and 2) that you’ll try and remember that you used to find something likeable interesting about me.

    Okay…

I am writing this Blog because Sunday nightI deleted someone, and unsubscribed from their Blog. It’s only the second time I’ve done that…which I suppose is not too bad for the length of time I’ve been on MySpace,

I normally don’t have a problem with being in disagreement with someone..not as long as mutual respect remains..not as long as we don’t denomize one another.

But what I saw on Sunday on this person’s Blog was a debate, caused by a photo of Barak Obama, where the most reacist, mean-spirited demoniaing rhetoric reigned unchecked.

The issue sparked by the photograh?

Is Obama unpatriotic, a friend of terrorist because he did not put his hand over his heart ti supposedly “honor the flag”.

Apparently, the owner of the Blog and his many fans felt that the answer was yes.

Never mind that a person may have a religious reason for how they choose to respond to the Flag, or say/not say the Pledge.

The consensus was, if you love this country, you’ll wave the flag and say the pledge. Otherwise you’re an eneny and scum.

When I was in the 8th grade…around 13 years old (the years was 1966) I decided I wasn’t going to say “The Pledge” anymore.

The “Republic for which it was stands” was clearly not “one nation”, it clearly was not “indivisible”..and only an idiot would say that there “was liberty and justice for all”.

I was willing to silently stand with respect as my classmates recited the flag….but I was banished to the hallway while this ceremony took place.

My feelings really have not so much changed since then, but rather grown – I love my country – I feel a surge of pride and love when I see the USA flag flying – that it is NOT proper to confuse the flag for the country, or for me to utter words that are not( yet) true.

I will admit that in the days following “9/11”., the Flag hung in the window of my room, and I wore a lapel pin on all my jackets and vests.

I removed the lapel pins and the flag from my window when it became clear that those who supported Bush’s attacks on Iraq was calling those who questioned in any fashion whatsoever “anti-American” and “terrorists”.

.The people who only a few weeks before had talked about a “united” America were saying, to me, that they and they alone defined had the right to determine what patriotism really meant…and they were doing while waving the very flag that was supposed to be the symbol of “freedom and democracy”.

To wear or display the flag now seems to mean supporting the “freedom, equality, and justice,is for some”.

SO..instead of wearing the flag, or displaying the flag, rather than mumbling the Pledge….I’d rather work for the America that I think should exist to make the words and symbol TRUTH, not just for America but for the world.

    Hippie Rant: Investigate this!!

Seen on Facebook, a guy named James T. Kirk shaed:

What happened in Libya was awful. I hate thinking about the last moments of Chris Stevens’ life. I agree there needs to be a full investigation and a full disclosure of the facts. But the next time someone uses it as one more tool to beat up on Obama, you can remind them:

June 14, 2002, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pak
istan Suicide bomber kills 12 and injures 51.

February 20, 2003, international diplomatic compound in Riyadh, Saudi ArabiaTruck bomb kills 17.

February 28, 2003, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan Gunmen on motorcycles killed two consulate guards.

July 30, 2004, U.S. embassy in Taskkent, Uzbekistan Suicide bomber kills two

.December 6, 2004, U.S. consulate in Jeddah, Saudi ArabiaMilitants stormed and occupied perimeter wall. Five killed, 10 wounded.

March 2, 2006, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan Suicide car bomber killed four, including a U.S. diplomat directly targeted by the assailants.

September 12, 2006, U.S. embassy in Damascus, Syria Gunmen attacked embassy with grenades, automatic weapons, and a car bomb (though second truck bomb failed to detonate). One killed and 13 wounded.

January 12, 2007, U.S. embassy in Athens, Greece A rocket-propelled grenade was fired at the embassy building. No one was injured

.July 9, 2008, U.S. consulate in Istanbul, Turkey Armed men attacked consulate with pistols and shotguns. Three policemen killed.

March 18, 2008, U.S. embassy in Sana’a, Yemen Mortar attack misses embassy, hits nearby girls’ school instead.

, U.S. embassy in Sana’a, Yemen Militants dressed as policemen attacked the embassy with RPGs, rifles, grenades and car bombs. Six Yemeni soldiers and seven civilians were killed. Sixteen more were injured.

Then ask them where the congressional investigations were for those incidents.

The sad thing is that Republican Party/Tea Party can get away with this kind of grandstanding and making a political football out of tragedies knowing that conservative base wil permit anything to be done and said as long as it is anti-Obama,
